Hundreds Attend WAC Lighting Invitational Science Fair on Earth Day
Commack, NY, Sunday, April 22, 2012--Over 400 young aspiring scientists, doctors and engineers, who are currently attending high schools across Long Island, New York, presented more than 300 science projects at The WAC Lighting Invitational Science Fair at Commack High School on Earth Day.
The Science Fair featured a wide range of projects in Environmental Science, Prototype Engineering; Biochemistry; General Biology; Behavioral Science; Chemistry; Physical Science; and Computer Science. Organized by The Research Association, the Fair is a consortium of 13 Long Island high schools offering extensive science research programs: Commack, Great Neck North, Great Neck South, Herricks, Jericho, Locust Valley, Manhasset, North Shore Hebrew Academy, Paul D. Schreiber, Roslyn, South Side, Syosset, and The Wheatley School.
Project subjects range from the complex, “Multi-field Visualization of Tropospheric Data through Google Earth - A Model System for Location Based Analysis,” and “The effects of temperature and pH on the incubation period and lifespan of brine shrimp,” to the highly complex, “Calculating the Transit-Timing and Transit-Duration Variation Signals Produced by a Potential Exomoon Orbiting an Exoplanet Detected Using Kepler-class Transit Photometry,” and “Fractionated Decoctions of Radix glycyrrhizae Coupled Action to Inhibit Eotaxin-1 Secretions and Enhance OVA-Specific IgE Detection.”
Students presented their research to esteemed judges from a variety of leading universities, hospitals, private practices and industries from the New York Metropolitan area, including: Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Columbia University, Long Island University, New York University, North Shore University Hospital-LIJ Medical Center, Wiell Cornell Medical College, Hofstra University, Mount Sinai Medical Center, and other prestigious institutions.
Participating students have gone on to pursue advanced studies at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), SUNY at Stony Brook, Harvard, Yale University, Brown, Johns Hopkins, Stanford, Rochester University and other major learning institutions.
